Gilleland Creek Trail segment now open
A new trail segment is now complete thanks to a Texas Recreational Trails Fund Grant from Texas Parks & Wildlife for the .56 mile project that closes a trail gap along Gilleland Creek Trail. This project links the easternmost and westernmost sections of the trail between Heatherwilde Blvd. and Swenson Farms Blvd. Residents can now enjoy walking, jogging hiking, biking, and exploring nature on a 6.57 mile continuous trail through the heart of Pflugerville. Connecting neighborhood parks, the recreation center and other existing trails, the Gilleland Creek Trail segment also provides safe roadway crossing at Heatherwilde Blvd. and Swenson Farms Blvd. by utilizing underpasses. The new trail takes advantage of the scenic setting by meandering along the creek and through diverse natural features previously unreachable.
The trail is a 10 foot wide concrete path that increases both connectivity and accessibility for the City’s Trail Network. The trail segment was listed as a priority in the City’s Comprehensive Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan adopted in January 2011 and Pflugerville Trails Master Plan completed in 2014. The total cost for the trail is approximately $350,000 with $172,500 from grant funds and $57,500 from annual Deutschen Pfest proceeds and Parkland Dedication funds.
