Council discuss Parks and Recreation Capital Improvement Program

Post Date:12/01/2017 10:13 a.m.

During the City Council worksession, the Parks and Recreation Department's $27 million Capital Improvement Program update provided status reports on the current list of projects including 1849 Park, renovations to the Gilleland Creek pool and buildings, the Bohls house, and proposed feasibility studies for a future Recreation Center and Senior Center feasibility study and aquatic facility study. Noting that the Gilleland Pool has flooded three times since 2013, Parks and Recreation Director James Hemenes presented a modified project scope involving health and safety renovations to the Gilleland Creek Pool and limited renovations of the existing bath house. The Gilleland Pool modified project will include all new plumbing and mechanical systems for the pool, a complete replaster of the pool, relocating pumps and electric equipment above the flood plain elevation, renovations to the restrooms/locker rooms for public use, and an aquatics feasibility study for long-term city aquatic needs.

The City Council discussed the Bohls House which was gifted to the city by the Pflugerville Community Development Corporation and placed in Heritage Park in 2014. The city is reviewing options for the facility including staff work space, and this project will return to council at a future date. The goal of the informative presentation was to have an open discussion on Parks and Recreation projects. No action was taken by the council, and several of the projects will return to Council on future agendas for direction.

During the meeting, City Council did approve the award of the Phase 1B construction contract for 1849 Park which includes restrooms, parking lots, landscape, irrigation and other improvements to provide the needed facilities to allow the first phase of 1849 Park to open for sports league practice and play anticipated in summer 2018.
